Prediabetes Can Lead to Diabetes

If you have prediabetes, it means that your blood sugar or glucose level is high.

Healthy lifestyle choices, like those below, can help prevent prediabetes and stop its progression to type 2 diabetes and help control your blood pressure and cholesterol:

  • Control your weight; if you are overweight, your prediabetes is more likely to turn into diabetes, yet losing as little as 5-10 percent of your body weight makes a difference.
  • Get and stay active with moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Eat healthy foods that include low-fat protein, fiber-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts, olive oil and whole grains. Limit calories, serving sizes, sugar and starchy carbs.

Keep in close touch with your doctor about managing your prediabetes, since it can keep type 2 diabetes out of your future.
